Actual acoustic values achieved on site are a result of many influencing factors of a complex nature. The values stated are a result of rigorous independent laboratory testing to the highest standards. However, variances in performance on site may result, due to workmanship or other external factors that cannot be fully modelled within laboratory conditions.
The tips given here are mainly taken from Robust Details and are a guide to achieving the highest possible ratings. |

Tips for Timber/Steel Frame
|
|
| |
Walls
• Do not let anything bridge across wall linings
• If using cavity insulation ensure a tight and accurate fitting between studs without sagging
• Stagger joints beween Phonewell® and plasterboard to avoid air paths
• Seal all plasterboard joints with tape or caulk with sealant, including the perimeter
• Where electrical sockets are absolutely necessary pack behind with Phonewell® and caulk with flexible sealant, do not place back to back
• For twin walls ensure no connection between the two leaves except where ties are necessary for structural reasons
• Ensure all cavity stops/closers are flexible or fixed to one frame only |
Floors
• Lay Phonewell® floating floor in a brickwork pattern tightly butted together, no need to tape or caulk joints
• With Phonewell®, flanking strips are not necessary. If an 18-22mm floating top surface above Phonewell is installed, install flanking strips around the perimeter of the flooring board to isolate floor from walls and skirtings. Alternatively a 5mm (min) gap may be caulked with flexible sealant
• If using thermal insulation, lay quilt between all joists ensuring no gap remains
• Ensure ceiling battens or resilient bars are fixed at right angles to the joists
• Screw ceiling layers into battens or resilient bars, not joists |

Tips for Solid Block |
|
| |
Walls
• Keep cavity wall ties free from mortar droppings and debris
• Fully fill all blockwork joints with mortar
• Make sure there is no connection between the two leaves except for wall ties and foundation
• Only use solid blocks for separating and flanking walls
• Keep chases for services to a minimum and fill with mortar. Avoid back to back chases
• Flues must be built into a false chimney breast on separating walls
• For exceptional ratings secure Phonewell® to battens or resilient bars, and plasterboard to Phonewell® |
Floors
• Butt planks or blocks tightly together
• Grout all joints between planks/blocks
• Fill all voids between walls and floors
• Lay Phonewell® floating floor in a brickwork pattern tightly butted together, no need to tape or caulk joints
•With Phonewell®, flanking strips are not necessary. If an 18-22mm floating top surface above Phonewell® is installed, install flanking strips around the perimeter of the flooring board to isolate floor from walls and skirtings. Alternatively a 5mm (min) gap may be caulked with flexible sealant |
