Sound Insulation for Timber Frame Building
Part E Floors • Walls Optional FloorsCeilings

Part E Building Regulation Compliance

For general floor improvement options see Soundproofing Floors

Flanking Details:
All acoustic floors and walls are susceptible to flanking noise via flanking paths which may need treating, particularly lightweight block walls.

  Airborne 60dB(-6 Ctr)
Impact 53dB

soundproofing, Part E compliant separating timber joist floor

Construction
(Solid Timber Joist):
- 18mm chipboard or FINISHED surface

Walls
(Min. 50dB with Phonewell® directly to stud on one side only)

For general Wall improvement options see Soundproofing Walls

Timber Frame Wall
Single Stud Wall
One Phonewell® layer on one side only brings 36dB (Rw, -4Ctr) and an overall reduction of 50dB!
An Airborne reduction of 60dB+ is achievable when Phonewell is on both sides.
Easy fitting and easy services installation.

Timber Frame Twin Wall
Twin Stud Wall (50mm min. gap)
One Phonewell® layer to one side only brings 36dB (Rw, -4Ctr) insulation and 1200kg/m3 density.
Isolated twin frames are only necessary for acoustically critical applications.

  Decoupled on Resilient Bars
Additional Plasterboard Layer

Floors

For general floor improvement options see Soundproofing Floors
Timber Floor with No Cavity Insulation
The Open Cavity System
For applications not requiring Thermal Cavity Insulation.
For simple retrofitting over the sub-deck
with an unknown cavity.

Timber Floor with Cavity Insulation
The Thermal Cavity System
For applications requiring additional
Thermal Cavity Insulation. The standard first floor in England. *Tests undertaken with 7mm hard laminate floor covering!

Airborne (Rw + Ctr)
Impact (Lnw)
58dB
60dB

Timber Floor with Double Impact

Timber Floor Batten System

The Dual Impact & Airborne System
For applications requiring additional
Impact Insulation down to 56dB (Lnw).
The lower the result the better!
The Batten System
For applications requiring extensive
sound insulation and ease of fitting services. Phonewell® strips can be laid under the battens to provide dual impact. Note standard inexpensive kiln dried timber can be used for the battens.

Ceilings

For general Ceiling improvement options see Soundproofing Ceilings

Timber Ceiling
Retrofitting
Used when retrofitting where access to the floor above is not possible, eg. multi storey apartments. One Phonewell® layer brings 36dB (Rw, -4Ctr) insulation.
