Soundproofing Ceilings with Phonewell Ceiling Sound Insulation
Timber JoistsSolid Concrete

Phonewell® Sound Insulation on ceilings:
- improves both Airborne and Impact noise reduction
- is extremely thin
- is easy to install
- is natural and sustainable
- provides longevity
- independently certified

Where there is access to the floor above see Soundproofing Floors.

There are two main solutions to soundproofing ceilings in order to achieve both airborne and impact noise reduction; both meet building regulations.

Timber Joist and Concrete Ceilings can be sound insulated by either (1) leaving existing plasterboard / ceiling lining in place and optionally fixing battens to the ceiling or (2) by removing existing plasterboard / ceiling lining.

Flanking Details:
All acoustic ceilings are susceptible to flanking noise via flanking walls which may need treating, particularly lightweight block. When needed only one wall either upstairs OR downstairs is usually required. See Soundproofing Walls.

Timber Joists

1. Decoupled Solution for Existing Ceiling: 43.5mm - 94mm

Application: - simple slim solution offering a high performance and absolute minimal loss of living space, without removing the existing ceiling.

Construction (Timber Joist Ceiling):
- ceiling with existing plasterboard or lath and plaster.
- (optional 48mm x 48mm timber battens with 50mm x 45kg/m3 density mineral wool between studs).
- 16mm Resilient Bars.
- 15mm Phonewell® sound insulation.
- 12.5mm or 15mm sound resistant plasterboard.
- (optional second layer of plasterboard).

2. Decoupled Solution for an Exposed Ceiling where the Plasterboard / Ceiling Lining has been Removed: 43.5mm - 94mm

Application: - simple slim solution offering a high performance with absolute minimal loss of living space, where the existing ceiling has been removed.

Construction (Timber Joist Ceiling):
- ceiling where existing lining has been removed.
- 100mm x 45kg/m3 density mineral wool fitted within cavity
OR
- 48mm x 48mm timber battens with 50mm x 45kg/m3 density mineral wool between battens.
- 16mm Resilient Bars.
- 15mm Phonewell® sound insulation.
- 12.5mm or 15mm sound resistant plasterboard.
- (optional second layer of plasterboard).
